[A spearhead of anti-tank warfare who was famous for his quick feet] During World War II, the M18 Hellcat was a tank destroyer developed by the U.S. Army to compete against powerful German tanks such as the Tiger and Panther. Equipped with a high-power 76mm tank cannon on an open-top turret that emphasizes enemy search power. In order to secure space within the turret, the main gun loading section was laid out with a 45 degree rotation around the gun barrel. In addition, the compact body was pursued to be lightweight, and features such as automatic transmission and torsion bar suspension, a first for an American tank, were introduced. The 9-cylinder radial gasoline engine mounted at the rear of the vehicle allowed it to achieve a maximum speed of over 80 km/h, making it the fastest tracked vehicle in World War II. Production of the Hellcat began in July 1943, and it made its first appearance on the Italian front in 1944. After that, it was dispatched to northwest Europe and the Pacific Theater, defeating German tanks one after another using hit-and-away tactics that took advantage of its high speed and firepower. As a spearhead in anti-tank combat, it contributed to the victory of the American military.
